Blog #1: I Don't Need A Man
Prompt 1: Miss A was a Korean Pop (K-Pop) girl group composed of four members: Jia, Min, Suzy and Fei. The cultural artifact I chose is their song titled “I Don’t Need A Man,” it is about the empowerment of women, stating lyrics such as “I can live well without a man” and “I overflow with confidence that’s why I love myself.” Within the beginning of the music video they are seen wearing business casual attire and eventually one member, Jia, is seen wearing a crown paired with a t-shirt and what could be interpreted as the bottom half of a wedding dress.
Prompt 2: The music video as well as the lyrics of “I Don’t Need A Man” clearly goes against the traditional ideas of gender and gender expression. As mentioned before, the outfits that they wore seemed business casual, then there were outfits that somewhat flaunted their figures, to outfits with a twist that fit their personality. These outfit changes portray their diversity and how they are in control therefore, not needing to rely on anyone because they can depend on themselves. The song starts off with the lyrics “this is for all the independent women” followed by paying for their own rent, food, and etc and though they do not make a lot they are content with what they have. The lyrics then go on to take a jab at guys that try to get a girl simply by saying “I’ll take care of you, I’ll cherish you,” this further illustrates how they do not need to be with someone to feel good. A way that femininity was reinforced within the music video is that they are dressed with nice jewelry, in the backgrounds during the solo shots you can find jewelry, heels, and a hair salon. The cultural artifact says that women should be able to dress and act as they please without a doubt.
Prompt 3: This song was released in 2012, when I was 13 years old and in my freshman year of high school. Moving and attending school in a new area was very nerve-racking however, this song somehow became my “anthem” for a short while. Though I still experience some struggle with self-identity, it did play a role in staying true to myself and remembering to be independent.
Prompt 4: The cultural object I have chosen is Miss A’s song “I Don’t Need A Man.” The social world it exists in would be the whole world since it includes both men and women. The creator of this cultural object would be the staff of JYP Entertainment, specifically those who helped in creating the song. And lastly, the receivers are directed towards, as stated in the beginning of the song, “all the independent ladies” however, it could be interpreted by whomever listens to it and feels that they are self-reliant or need to strive towards that path.
